HBSN at the Rio School District Parent Symposium 2026

At Happy Baby Social Nest, we believe something simple but powerful: play is not just fun, it’s foundational.

We had the incredible opportunity to bring message to life at the Rio School District Parent Symposium 2026, where we facilitated a parent workshop centered on purposeful play in the early years. Our goal was to shift perspectives, spark curiosity, and give families practical tools they can start using right away.

Why Purposeful Play Matters

In the early years of childhood, play is how children learn best. It’s how they explore the world, test ideas, express emotions, and build relationships. But not all play is created equal, purposeful play is intentional, connection-driven, and rich with opportunities for growth.

During the workshop, we broke down how everyday interactions, such as singing songs, stacking blocks, making eye contact, sharing a laugh are actually doing much deeper work beneath the surface.

They’re building the brain.

Serve and Return: The Science Behind the Magic

One of the key concepts we explored was serve and return a powerful interaction between a child and caregiver.

When a child “serves” (through a sound, gesture, look, or word) and an adult “returns” with a meaningful response, something incredible happens: neural connections in the brain are strengthened and formed.

These repeated back-and-forth moments literally wire a child’s brain.

That means the experiences children have, especially the ones rooted in connection with their favorite people (mom and dad) aren’t just fleeting moments. They’re shaping how children think, communicate, regulate emotions, and build relationships for years to come.

Shifting Into Play Mode

To help parents truly feel this shift, we invited them to step into a playful mindset starting with a simple but powerful tool: colorful glasses.

It may sound small, but it changed everything.

Those glasses became a symbol of perspective. When parents put them on, they gave themselves permission to slow down, be present, get curious, and engage with their child in a more playful, connected way.

We then guided families through “Play Mode” activities, simple, low-pressure ways to turn everyday moments into meaningful interactions:

  • Turning routines into games

  • Following their child’s lead

  • Using movement, music, and imagination

  • Focusing on connection over perfection

No fancy materials. No complicated setup. Just intentional moments of engagement.

From Awareness to Action

One of the most meaningful parts of the workshop was seeing parents connect the dots…realizing that they don’t need to “do more,” they just need to be more intentional with what they’re already doing.

Play doesn’t have to be Pinterest-perfect to be powerful.

It just needs to be present.

HBSN: Supporting Families Through Play

At Happy Baby Social Nest, this is the heart of our work. Whether we’re leading parent workshops, toddler classes, or community events, we are committed to helping families understand the why behind play and giving them the tools to bring it to life at home.

We’re proud to support families across Ventura County and to continue partnering with schools and organizations that value connection, development, and whole-child learning.

If you’re looking to bring a play-based workshop to your school, program, or community, we’d love to connect.

Because when we support play, we support development.
And when we support connection, we build strong, thriving families from the very start.

Happy Baby

Happy Baby Social Nest facilitates Play-based classes for babies 6-18 months of age. Classes are 60 minutes and include semi-structured activities that are developmentally appropriate and provide opportunities for growth. Babies will get to engage in sensory exploration, music, and play while parents learn about the cognitive, physical, and social emotional benefits of the various activities.
